I heard that the 9th court of appeals has struck down Arizona's voter registration law. Stating that providing proof of citizenship is too high a burden.

This drives me nucken futs.

Has it gotten to the point that persons that are not authorized to be in this country are now demanding that they receive the benefits of citizenship with out having to go through the process of properly becoming a citizen.

These ingrates need to go the hell home.

IF YOU'RE A MUSLIM - IT'S YOUR PROBLEM

WHEN will the Muslims of Britain stand up to be counted?

When will they declare, loud and clear, with no qualifications or quibbles about Britain's foreign policy, that Islamic terrorism is WRONG?

Most of all, when will the Muslim community in this country accept an absolute, undeniable, total truth: that Islamic terrorism is THEIR problem? THEY own it. And it is THEIR duty to face it and eradicate it.

To stop the denial, endless fudging and constant wailing that somehow it is everyone else's problem and, if Islamic terrorism exists at all, they are somehow the main victims.

Because until that happens the problem will never be resolved. And there will be more 7/7s and, sometime in the future, another airplane plot will succeed with horrific loss of innocent life.

Equally important, those British politicians who have seemed obsessed with pandering to, and even encouraging, this state of denial, must throw off their politically-correct blinkers and recognise the same truth—that Muslim terrorism in Britain is the direct responsibility of British Muslims.

If only they would follow the lead of Home Secretary John Reid, whose tough, pragmatic, clear-sighted approach has been a breath of fresh air. Only then can they properly work out how to tackle it.

For instance, every airport in Britain is in chaos over the plane bomb-plot alert as every passenger is subjected to rigorous security checks. Why? They take lots of time, lots of staff, and are extremely expensive.

I'm a white 62-year-old 6ft 4ins suit-wearing ex-cop—I fly often, but do I really fit the profile of suicide bomber? Does the young mum with three tots? The gay couple, the rugby team, the middle-aged businessman?

No. But they are all getting exactly the same amount and devouring huge resources for no logical reason whatsoever. Yet the truth is Islamic terrorism in the West has been universally carried out by young Muslim men, usually of ethnic appearance, almost always travelling alone or in very small groups. A tiny percentage, I bet, of those delayed today have such characteristics.

This targeting of airport resources is called passenger profiling—the Israelis invented it and they've got probably the safest airports and airlines in the world.

In all my years at the front line of fighting terrorism, one truth was always clear — communities beat terrorists, not governments or security forces. But communities can't beat terrorism unless they have the will to do so. My heart sank this week as I saw and read the knee-jerk reaction of friends and neighbours of those arrested in this latest incident, insisting it was all a mistake and the anti-terrorist squad had the wrong people.

I have no idea whether those arrested are guilty or not. But neither have those friends and neighbours. They spoke as if it was inconceivable such a thing could happen in their community; that those arrested were all good Muslims; that Islam is a religion of peace so no Muslim could dream of planning such an act.

But we heard the same from the family and friends of the 7/7 bombers, didn't we?

And the two young British Muslims who died as suicide bombers in Israel. Then there are the British Muslims known to have become suicide bombers in Iraq.

There is currently a huge, long-running and complex alleged Islamist bomb plot being tried at the Old Bailey. And a fistful of other cases of alleged Muslim terrorism plots such as the 21/7 London Underground case are also awaiting trial.

All this would suggest the blindingly obvious—that terrorism is a major problem for the Muslim community of Britain. Of course, there will be instant squealings that this is racism. It's not. It's exactly the same as recognising that, during the Northern Ireland troubles that left thousands dead, the IRA were totally based in the Catholic community and the UVF in the Protestant.

And that, most importantly, IRA terrorism only began to draw to a close when that Catholic community it was based in decided as a whole that it was no longer prepared to back violence as the only way forward. Interestingly, it was Catholic revulsion over republican terrorist atrocities such as Enniskillen and Omagh that fuelled that change.

Well, Muslim terrorism in Britain is based in, has its roots in, and grows in, our Muslim community. The madmen of 7/7 and other suicide bombings didn't hide among the Hindu communities, worship in the Sikh temples, recruit at Catholic churches, did they? It may be true that events in Iraq have angered sections of the Muslim community. I have no doubts, whatever Tony Blair says, that it was a catalyst. I also think it's entirely fair for Muslims, if they wish, to vocally oppose Britain's continuing involvement there.

I can recognise, too, that recent events in Lebanon inflame some people, and they want their voices of protest heard. The absolutely unacceptable problem is that this opposition is used by too many to turn a blind eye to, or excuse, terrorists in their midst.

Blasting a passenger airliner out of the sky, killing hundreds of innocent men, women and children, is NEVER acceptable. Under any circumstances. There is NEVER an excuse.

A terrible tragedy costing Muslim lives in Lebanon or Iraq or Afghanistan is never ever an excuse for terrorism here.

It is totally unacceptable, totally wrong. What one party perceives as a wrong, no matter how strongly they feel, does not, in turn, justify another wrong being done to avenge it.

And until every single member of the Muslim community believes that and preaches that—from an ordinary parent to imam or madrassa teacher—terrorism can't be beaten.

Politicians must accept this truth, and do something about it. One example would be to tackle this chaos at our airports and the passenger profiling I described earlier. Another must is to reconsider ID cards. The importance of knowing whether someone really is who they say they are has never been higher.

This must be combined with improved border controls, logging exactly who goes OUT of the country as well as who comes in should also be reconsidered, whatever the politically correct among us may say. The time terrorism suspects are kept in custody before charge has also caused dissent. Currently the maximum is 28 days—it may well be this should be reconsidered and, if necessary, raised again to, say, 42 days.

Plainly, Muslim terrorism isn't going away. We need to consider everything in our battle to defeat it. But that's the responsibility of all.

Not least the community where, sadly for them, it is festering.

There is much noise out there in this interweb thingie reference the pending closure of Club Gitmo and the campers currently vacationing on the American taxpayer's dime.

Lets start at the beginning. The enemies of the west (the United States) have conducted operations against US interests at home and overseas for decades. Just because one side is slow to pick up on the clues does not change the fact that a defacto state of war has been in effect. Sense 2001, the left in this country has been all pissie when "all of the sudden" the Commander In Chief of the Armed Forces of the United States of America goes before the Congress of the United States and requests formal authorization. The Congress authorized the use of force. Apparently, The democrats in the Congress did not think that the POTUS would exercise that authority (although POTUS already had congressional authority to use force, given to the last administration).

So, in response to the attack of 11 Sept, 2001, POTUS ordered up a large can of woop ass opened up on the piles of human wreckage the was fingered as the ones responsible.

The Taliban falls as a government in 3 weeks. The US put less than 15,000 sets of boots on the ground for that little party.

That little bag of camel shit in Baghdad was giving the world the finger for the last 10 years. Refusing to live up to it's Cease Fire obligations. TO wit, fully account for all WMD. He did not. HE paid the price for the games that he played. Remember that the 42’nd POTUS allowed the Baghdad punk to act like a spoiled brat by failing to comply with the cease-fire agreement of 1991. This is the reason that you will find it difficult to negotiate with instable leaders of countries hostile to the interests of the United States.

Now on to the meat.

The 225 or so piles of “human” wreckage have a problem. Are they or are they not EPW’s as defined by international treaty. That will depend on who you ask and the details of the manner of how the person comes to be in the custody of the US Military. For the most practical reasons, US forces in the field are trained to treat by default all persons captured/detained in the theater of operations (battle field) as EPW’s (enemy prisoner of war). The guy at the vary point of the spear doesn’t have to time to sort all the different treaty classifications of persons that are found on the battlefield. We have been trained to use the 5 “S’s” search, silence, segregate, safeguard and speed. We are also trained to treat all captured or detained persons as EPW’s. It is not up to the capturing element to make that determination as to their status according to the law of war. That’s the job of the MI/MP unit that runs the PW collection point.

Like I said, we use the 5 S’s

Search – Search the captured person to insure that there is no weapons or any other item of intelligence importance. All items removed from the PW are to be tagged with the date/time and location of capture, capturing unit and evacuated though the S-2 chain. All items of a purely personal nature are to be returned to the person. The PW is to retain any personal safety equipment (helmet, protective mask).

Segregate – Separate captured persons (enlisted/NCO/Officer, male/female)

Silence – keep them quiet. Do not allow them to talk amongst themselves.

Safeguard – The capturing power is now responsible for the personal safety of the PW. Do not allow anyone to harm, harass, or otherwise injure the PW.

Speed – Evacuate the PW to the PW collection point ASAP.

See, at the pointy end of the stick, the options available for the classification of the captured person is zero. Any person grabbed is treated as a EPW the people higher will sort it out at their leisure.

Now, moving right along, when the EPW arrives at the PW collection point, usually at the brigade trains, they are further sorted, initial interviews conducted personal classified and the other treaty required actions are taken care of.

Under international law, (an interesting concept) over time rules of the ‘game’ have evolved to keep the confusion to a minimum. One set of rules is what makes up an ‘authorized player’. Lets go look at the generally recognized rulebook – the Geneva/Hague conventions:

A. Prisoners of war, in the sense of the present Convention, are persons belonging to one of the following categories, who have fallen into the power of the enemy:

(1) Members of the armed forces of a Party to the conflict, as well as members of militias or volunteer corps forming part of such armed forces.

(2) Members of other militias and members of other volunteer corps, including those of organized resistance movements, belonging to a Party to the conflict and operating in or outside their own territory, even if this territory is occupied, provided that such militias or volunteer corps, including such organized resistance movements, fulfill the following conditions:

(a) that of being commanded by a person responsible for his subordinates;

(b) that of having a fixed distinctive sign recognizable at a distance;

(c) that of carrying arms openly;

(d) that of conducting their operations in accordance with the laws and customs of war.

(3) Members of regular armed forces who profess allegiance to a government or an authority not recognized by the Detaining Power.

(4) Persons who accompany the armed forces without actually being members thereof, such as civilian members of military aircraft crews, war correspondents, supply contractors, members of labour units or of services responsible for the welfare of the armed forces, provided that they have received authorization from the armed forces which they accompany, who shall provide them for that purpose with an identity card similar to the annexed model.

(5) Members of crews, including masters, pilots and apprentices, of the merchant marine and the crews of civil aircraft of the Parties to the conflict, who do not benefit by more favorable treatment under any other provisions of international law.

(6) Inhabitants of a nonoccupied territory, who on the approach of the enemy spontaneously take up arms to resist the invading force, without having had time to form themselves into regular armed units, provided they carry arms openly and respect the laws and customs of war.

Likewise, there are rules that make a ‘civilian’ into a person deserving of the protections of the above provided they comply with the following:

The requirements specified in Article 4, paragraphs A (2) (a) to (d), GPW (par. 61) are satisfied in the following fashion:

a. Command by a Responsible Person. This condition is fulfilled if the commander of the corps is a commissioned officer of the armed forces or is a person of position and authority or if the members of the militia or volunteer corps are provided with documents, badges, or other means of identification to show that they are officers, noncommissioned officers, or soldiers so that there may be no doubt that they are not persons acting on their own responsibility. State recognition, however, is not essential, and an organization may be formed spontaneously and elect its own officers.

b. Fixed Distinctive Sign. The second condition, relative to the possession of a fixed distinctive sign recognizable at a distance is satisfied by the wearing of military uniform, but less than the complete uniform will suffice. A helmet or headdress which would make the silhouette of the individual readily distinguishable from that of an ordinary civilian would satisfy this requirement. It is also desirable that the individual member of the militia or volunteer corps wear a badge or brassard permanently affixed to his clothing. It is not necessary to inform the enemy of the distinctive sign, although it may be desirable to do so in order to avoid misunderstanding.

c. Carrying Arms Openly. This requirement is not satisfied by the carrying of weapons concealed about the person or if the individuals hide their weapons on the approach of the enemy.

d. Compliance With Law of War. This condition is fulfilled if most of the members of the body observe the laws and customs of war, notwithstanding the fact that the individual member concerned may have committed a war crime. Members of militias and volunteer corps should be especially warned against employment of treachery, denial of quarters, maltreatment of prisoners of war, wounded, and dead, improper conduct toward flags of truce, pillage, and unnecessary violence and destruction.

So, to be on the battlefield is not always a bad thing as long as the rules are followed. Break the rules and things can go very poorly for you if captured by the other side. Set the way back machine to 1945-1946. The city of Nuremburg. It’s post war Germany. The allies are in a foul mood and decided that the persons responsible for certain acts are to be called to account. So trials were set up, held, evidence heard, judgments rendered. Some acquitted, most were convicted. Those convicted were sentenced to long prison terms or to hang by the neck for the crimes that they were convicted of.

So we now have the stage set for the 21^st century replay of the military tribunals. The persons (loose definition) being detained at Gitmo were to be tried by duly authorized military tribunals based on the detaining power (US) rights and duty under the laws of war.

According to treaty, any non-military person who violates any portion of the relevant provisions are subject to trial and be sentenced to up to and including death.

There is no ambiguity in this point of the LAW of WAR.

I's in a reflective mood this morning. I could not sleep last night. Been up sense 2 AM, was thinking about what is important to me at this time of year. The biggest thing is the fact that I get to make another trip around the sun. Ya, I's a man of simple pleasures. I have a wife and 3 children that I love (not that they detect much). A crazed cat and a faithful dog. I'm a bit of a odd fish. I don't express emotion well. I have always been a private person.Intend to keep most people at a distance to keep myself from getting hurt. I've been burned too many times.

There is nothing more important than family. Cherish them wile you still can.

Lets start pulling this apart and look at this from the perspective of plain English.

WE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES: A hopeful declaration of who this document is from and for.

IN ORDER TO FORM A MORE PERFECT UNION: This statement of fact presupposes that the people who came up with this were aware that perfection is an unattainable goal; but, a goal to strive for nonetheless.

ESTABLISH JUSTICE: to make firm or stable or to put beyond doubt; the principle or ideal of just dealing or right action (2): conformity to this principle or ideal.

INSURE DOMESTIC TRANQUILITY: to make certain especially by taking necessary measures and precautions; of, relating to, or originating within a country and especially one's own country; the quality or state of being tranquil (free from disturbance or turmoil).

PROVIDE FOR THE COMMON DEFENCE: to take precautionary measures; for the ; relating to a community at large; the act or action of defending or capability of resisting attack.

Conclusion/analysis:

The Preamble to the Constitution is an interesting collection of words and thoughts. It reflects the hopes and dreams of the people who first put this to paper back in the 1780’s. The authors had the experience with a monocracy and wanted nothing more of it. The earlier Articles of Confederation were also found to be sorely lacking. The authors knew that they could do better. This is their effort to bring order to chaos. As so many others have offered, this document is the Great Experiment in Self Governance. After the Constitutional Convention concluded, a man asked Franklin “what form of government have you given us?”, Franklin responded “A republic, if you can keep it!”.

The Constitution is the instructions to how to set up and manage the machinery of government. The Preamble gives us the ‘What’ and the ‘Why’. The rest of the document is the ‘How”

Ok, it's a year after Katrina bitchslaped the gulf coast. A large chunk of the Mississippi coast was flattened, along with eastern LA and western 'bamma. The Feds are estimating over 100 billion in damage. In Mississippi, cleanup and reconstruction is trundling right along (Republican gov), not a lot of winning. Not to say that all is goodness and light. Let's face it, those people are dealing with a government agencies. Each agency as there own rules and regulations that have to be complied with and they will conflict at the worst possible time.

That being said, who is responsible for the delay, foot dragging and assorted hoops that must be jumped through? The President, FEMME, State, County or local elected leaders? Like the hurricane itself, the left will place the blame directly at the feet of the President. Some will blame FEMA. But, no one at the state or local level will bother to look in the mirror and place the blame for the delays on the face they see in that mirror. Yes, I place the blame at those at the lowest level who are responsible for the direct delivery of services to those in the local community.

Has there been errors or delays in the delivery of federal aid? You bet. As memory serves, FEMA was slammed for not getting direct aid to the people who were effected. Then they were slammed when it was discovered that some people ripped FEMA off. All of this was political posturing designed to damage the administration and make them seem to be a bunch of cold hearted bastards or bumbing fools.

What is sick is the fact that very few have read the law that authorizes FEMA to take action and the limits of that action. If there are complaints about the way FEMA function, place pressure on the congress to change the law. Otherwise, close your pie hole.

With all the screeching about the "incompetent" federal response to the hurricane, much as been lost and or distorted about just did or did not happen or when that thing may or may not have happened.

First up, the controlling legal authority:

Â§ 5170. PROCEDURE FOR DECLARATION {Sec. 401}

All requests for a declaration by the President that a major disaster exists shall be made by the Governor of the affected State. Such a request shall be based on a finding that the disaster is of such severity and magnitude that effective response is beyond the capabilities of the State and the affected local governments and that Federal assistance is necessary. As part of such request, and as a prerequisite to major disaster assistance under this Act, the Governor shall take appropriate response action under State law and direct execution of the State's emergency plan. The Governor shall furnish information on the nature and amount of State and local resources which have been or will be committed to alleviating the results of the disaster, and shall certify that, for the current disaster, State and local government obligations and expenditures (of which State commitments must be a significant proportion) will comply with all applicable cost-sharing requirements of this Act. Based on the request of a Governor under this section, the President may declare under this Act that a major disaster or emergency exists.

In general

Federal agencies may on the direction of the President, provide assistance essential to meeting immediate threats to life and property resulting from a major disaster, as follows:

  Utilizing, lending, or donating to State and local governments Federal equipment, supplies, facilities, personnel, and other resources, other than the extension of credit, for use or distribution by such governments in accordance with the purposes of this Act.
2. Medicine, food, and other consumables
  
  Distributing or rendering through State and local governments, the American National Red Cross, the Salvation Army, the Mennonite Disaster Service, and other relief and disaster assistance organizations medicine, food, and other consumable supplies, and other services and assistance to disaster victims.
3. Work and services to save lives and protect property
  
  Performing on public or private lands or waters any work or services essential to saving lives and protecting and preserving property or public health and safety, including--
  1. debris removal;
  2. search and rescue, emergency medical care, emergency mass care, emergency shelter, and provision of food, water, medicine, and other essential needs, including movement of supplies or persons;
  3. clearance of roads and construction of temporary bridges necessary to the performance of emergency tasks and essential community services;
  4. provision of temporary facilities for schools and other essential community services;
  5. demolition of unsafe structures which endanger the public;
  6. warning of further risks and hazards;
  7. dissemination of public information and assistance regarding health and safety measures;
  8. provision of technical advice to State and local governments on disaster management and control; and
  9. reduction of immediate threats to life, property, and public health and safety.
4. Contributions
  
  Making contributions to State or local governments or owners or operators of private nonprofit facilities for the purpose of carrying out the provisions of this subsection.
Federal share

The Federal share of assistance under this section shall be not less than 75 percent of the eligible cost of such assistance.
Utilization of DOD resources
1. General rule
  
  During the immediate aftermath of an incident which may ultimately qualify for assistance under this title or title V of this Act [42 U.S.C. Â§Â§ 5170 et seq. or 5191 et seq.], the Governor of the State in which such incident occurred may request the President to direct the Secretary of Defense to utilize the resources of the Department of Defense for the purpose of performing on public and private lands any emergency work which is made necessary by such incident and which is essential for the preservation of life and property. If the President determines that such work is essential for the preservation of life and property, the President shall grant such request to the extent the President determines practicable. Such emergency work may only be carried out for a period not to exceed 10 days.
2. Rules applicable to debris removal
  
  Any removal of debris and wreckage carried out under this subsection shall be subject to section 5173(b) of this title [42 U.S.C. Â§ 5173Â(b)], relating to unconditional authorization and indemniÂfiÂcaÂtion for debris removal.
3. Expenditures out of disaster relief funds
  
  The cost of any assistance provided pursuant to this subsection shall be reimbursed out of funds made available to carry out this Act.
4. Federal share
  
  The Federal share of assistance under this subsection shall be not less than 75 percent.
5. Guidelines
  
  Not later than 180 days after the date of the enactment of the Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Amendments of 1988 [enacted Nov. 23, 1988], the President shall issue guidelines for carrying out this subsection. Such guidelines shall consider any likely effect assistance under this subsection will have on the availability of other forms of assistance under this Act.
6. Definitions
  
  For purposes of this section--
  1. Department of Defense
    The term 'Department of Defense' has the meaning the term "department" has under section 101 of title 10, United States Code.
  2. Emergency work
    The term "emergency work" includes clearance and removal of debris and wreckage and temporary restoration of essential public facilities and services.

If a disaster occurs in your community, local government and disaster-relief organizations will try to help you, but you need to be ready as well. Local responders may not be able to reach you immediately, or they may need to focus their efforts elsewhere.
You should know how to respond to severe weather or any disaster that could occur in your area - hurricanes, earthquakes, extreme cold, flooding, or terrorism.
You should also be ready to be self-sufficient for at least three days. This may mean providing for your own shelter, first aid, food, water, and sanitation.

Much has been said and written about the problems with our 'friends' to the north and south. And precious little has been done. There has been talk of a fence, a 'guest worker' program, amminstiy for the illeagles that are here (more than 5 million and counting).

There are things that can be done and there are things that should be done. Here is my list.

Nothing makes for good behavior like a good fence. Build the fence. We c an start modestly. Start with the high traffic areas, channelize the avenues of approach into zones that can be effectively interdicted. Closing the whole border need not be done at once. Just conduct a military terrain study. It aint rocket science.

Remove the economic incentive to employ illeagales in the US. Here is how I do this:
Federal Law - make the issue a matter of National Security. If a job site is raided and IBC's (illegal Border Crosser) are discovered and the employer is found to knowingly hired the IBC, , the following criminal penalties are enforced with no deviation or mercy - 5 years in federal prison (medium security, no 'country club') and $50,000 fine. This is to be imposed on a each IBC basis.

Oh, don't forget the 'Guest worker' program. I'm all for that, with this little twist: There will be NO guest worker permits issued within the confines of the continental United States or Alaska, Hawaii or any other US territory.

All permits will be issued from the embassy or consulate in the nation the applicacant claims citizenship from. Permits will be issued by the Department of Homeland Security after a background check determines that the person does not pose a risk to national security. An issued permit will expire 180 days from date if issue. There is no renewal provision wile in the US. The person MUST return in person to office that issued the original permit to re-apply. The permit holder must report to the local DHS office weekly to verify the status of employment and all other restrictions placed on the persons movement. If the person violates the terms and conditions of the permit, that person is subject to immediate arrest and deportation with out any other recourse. No person admitted into the territory of the US may apply for resident alien or refuge status at any time during the life of the permit or the next 180 day period after the return to their nation of origin.

Hello. Remember me? Some people call me Old Glory, others call me the Star Spangled Banner, but whatever they call me, I am your flag, the flag of the United States of America. Something has been bothering me, so I thought I might talk it over with you - because it is about you and me.

I remember some time ago, people would line up on both side of the street to watch the parade, and naturally I was leading every one, proudly waving in the breeze.

When your Daddy saw me coming, he immediately removed his hat and placed it against his left shoulder so that his hand was directly over his heart - remember?

And you, I remember, were standing there, straight as a soldier. You didn't have a hat, but you were giving the right salute. Remember your little sister? Not to be outdone, she was saluting the same as you with her right hand over her heart - remember?

What happened? I'm still the same old flag. Oh, I've added a few more stars since you were a boy, and a lot more blood has been shed since those parades of long ago.

But now, somehow I don't feel as proud as I used to feel. When I come down the street, you just stand there with your hands in your pockets. You may give me a small glance, and then you look away. I see children running around you shouting; they don't seem to know who I am.

I saw one man take his hat off, then he looked around, and when he didn't see anybody else take off his hat, he quickly put his on again.

Is it a sin to be patriotic today? Have you forgotten what I stand for, and where I have been? Anzio, Guadalcanal, Korea and Vietnam!

Take a look at the memorial honor rolls, and see the names of those patriotic Americans who gave their lives to keep this republic free. When you salute me, you are actually saluting them!

So when you see me, please stand straight and place your hand over your heart, and I'll know that you remembered. I'll salute you by waving back!

Given a combat situation and you are faced with the following.

Enemy troops, equipment, material, and supplies.
Inhabited towns and cities.
Protected property (hospitals, museums, schools, churches, etc).
Civilians and private property
Sick and wounded captives and detainees.
Surrendering enemy troops.
Observing a member of your force about to perform an illegal action.
Receiving an order to perform an illegal action
Being captured by the enemy and being held as a prisoner of war (PW)

STANDARDS

Perform combat operations using lawful weapons and tactics, and engaging only lawful targets.
Treat all captives, civilians, and their property according to the law of war.
Take appropriate action when faced with violations of the law of war or illeagal orders.
Identify your rights and duties as a PW.

TRAINING AND EVALUATION

Training Information Outline

Perform your combat mission using lawful weapons and tactics, and attack only lawful targets

All United States/North Atlantic Treaty Organization (US/NATO) issued weapons and ammunition are lawful. Do not alter your weapons or ammunition to increase enemy suffering (for example, dumdum bullets, poisoned ammunition and altered bayonets).
Unlawful tactics include faking surrender, using enemy marked vehicles and uniforms DURING combat, and booby trapping dead or wounding personnel. Also, medical service symbols (Red Cross, Red Crescent, the Red Lion and Sun, and the Red Star of David) can not be used except for medical act ivies.
Attack only combat targets. Use the firepower necessary to accomplish your mission but avoid needless destruction.

(1) Civilians and soldiers who have surrendered, or who are captured, sick or wounded are not combat targets. Medical personnel, vehicles and facilities are also not combat targets.

(2) Undefended civilian buildings including those used for religious, art, science, or charitable purposes; historic monuments, and hospitals are not combat targets. A red cross or red crescent on a white background, or, in Europe, a blue and white shield often mark protected property.

Treat captives, civilians, and property on the battlefield according to the law of war.

Allow enemy soldiers to surrender. Treat all captives as enemy prisoners of war (EPW).

(1) Protect them from acts of violence, intimidation, and sexual abuse. Provide them food, water, shelter, and medical treatment.

(2) Safeguard captives from the dangers of combat. Captives may not be used as shields or screens, to clear or plant mines and booby traps, or as hostages. Evacuate them as soon as possible.

Treat all civilians humanely. Treat them as you would want to be treated.

(1) Do not use physical force or mental coercion on civilians. Protect them from acts of violence, intimidation, and sexual abuse.

(2) Collective punishment, reprisals, and the taking of hostages is prohibited.

Treat property found on the battlefield in the proper manner.

(1) Turn enemy military property such as weapons, maps, vehicles, and items of intelligence value in to the chain of command.

(2) Civilian property and captives’ personal property and military equipment necessary for personal protection and welfare (helmets, protective masks, and clothing) may not be seized, stolen, or looted. In certain limited situations, civilian property may be requisitioned due to military necessity; but this decision must be made by the commanding officer.

Identify violations of the law of war or illegal orders and try to stop them. Report all violations by friendly or enemy troops.

Violations of the law of war are criminal acts. They are punishable inder the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).
If you believe the law of war is being violated, do your best to stop it.

(1) Clarify unclear orders by repeating what you believe to be your correct orders.

(2) State that you disagree with the act.

(3) Use moral arguments.

(4) Threaten to report the act.

(5) Ask the senior soldier to stop the act.

(6) Refuse to obey an order to commit a criminal act.

If the act is done or the criminal order is not withdrawn, immediately report the act or order through your chain of command. If the chain of command is not appropriate (such as when a member of the chain of command is suspected of committing a criminal act), report it to the Inspector General (IG). Provost Marshal, chaplain, or a Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG) officer. You must report all war crimes no matter who commits them. Crimes committed by the enemy must also be reported.

Recognize the correct treatment for PW’s. This applies to both your captives and to you (if you become a PW).

PW’s have the following rights:

(1) Receive housing and clothing.

(2) Receive enough food to stay in good health.

(3) Receive adequate medical care.

(4) Receive necessary facilities for proper hygiene.

(5) Practice their religious faith of choice.

(6) Send and receive mail.

(7) Keep personal property except weapons and military equipment and documents not needed for personal safety.

(8) Receive packages containing food, clothing, educational, religious, or recreational material.

(9) Be represented be a fellow PW.

(10) Receive humane treatment from their captors.

(11) Have a copy of the Geneva Convention on Prisoners of War and its annexes, including any special agreements posted in a location where they can be read by PW’s. They must be written in the PW’s language.

(12) Have a copy of all camp regulations, notices, orders, and publications about their conduct as a prisoner of war posted where they can be read. They must be written in the PW’s language.

As a PW you must:

(1) Tell your captors only your name, rank, service number, and date of birth.

(2) Obey all lawful rules established by your captors.

(3) If required by your captors, you must perform labor which is nonmilitary and is not humiliating, dangerous, or unhealthy. Captors can require Noncommissioned Officers (NCOs) only supervise such labor.

EVALUATION PREPERATION

SETUP: Soldiers should be individually tested for this task. The evaluator briefs the soldier of the simulated combat situation. The soldier is then questioned as to his recognition and actions regarding the performance measures. The most realistic training of this task is to include law of war problems in Army Training and Evaluation Programs (ARTEP) and field training exercises (FTX). The problems should require skill level 1 soldier recognition and action.

BRIEF SOLDIER: Tell the soldier that he or she is in a simulated combat environment. The US is at war and the soldier may engage various targets using a variety of weapons and ammunition. Enemy soldiers may surrender, be sick or wounded, or capture the soldier. Civilian buildings, and many types of property may be on the battlefield. The soldier will be asked to describe types of targets, weapons, tactics, personnel, and what actions he or she should take.

So You Say You Support The Troops? 2d Ed.

It’s so easy to say you support the troops, regardless of which side you come down on in the issue of the War in Iraq itself. Yeah, you can send care packages and put yellow ribbon magnets on your car to make you feel all warm and fuzzy that you’re doing your own small part. You can do as I do and use forums such as this one to expound the viewpoint of the folks we send in harm’s way, hoping that someway, somehow, someone who can make a difference may read your rant and actually do that something that makes a difference.

But right now, folks, we have a rare opportunity, a seldom-held power for ordinary citizens, to actually do something for the troops that will bring them more comfort than any supportive letters or boxes of cookies and candy ever possibly could. You see, right now we have the ability to provide them with comfort of mind, to lift a mental and emotional burden that they all carry with them when they enter any theater of combat.

We hold in our collective hands the ability to grant them assurance that should the worst befall them, we, their grateful nation, will provide for their loved ones in a manner that will approximate what they would have provided in the normal course of their lives.

Under current law, Uncle Sam is a rather parsimonious patron when it comes to providing for the families of fallen warriors. For example, when an American is killed in combat, the surviving spouse receives a one-time death gratuity of $12,400. Service Member's Group Life Insurance coverage (SGLI) up to $250,000 is available for those service members who can afford to pay the premiums. If the fallen trooper has been in service for an extended period of time, the surviving family may also qualify for the Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP), which is paid up to age 62 or until the spouse remarries. This SBP benefit is limited to 55 percent of the soldier's retirement pay, in the pay grade at the time of death. With so many combat deaths occurring among the youngest service members, we must keep in mind that this is frequently a pay grade that actually qualifies the family for food stamps and aid for dependent children.The annual base pay of a sergeant E-5, with six years of service is less than $30,000. With twenty years service his retirement benefit is half of that. Think for a moment what 55 percent of less than $15,000 amounts to. Think about being a young widow trying to raise small children on less than $700 a month. And for lower pay grades, which constitute the majority of combat deaths, the situation is even grimmer because most of them will not have served long enough for their families to qualify for even this miserly benefit. Even if the service member is insured to the maximum amount, an unlikelihood for younger troops, think about how little $250,000 amounts to over the twenty-plus years required to raise and educate children in today’s world.

Now think about the benefits conferred by our government on the survivors of 9/11. Yes, think about it long and hard: millions awarded to families because their loved one happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Millions handed to them not because their loved one had volunteered for the hard service of fighting in combat, but had simply shown up for work. Tell me, America: where’s the justice in this situation?

Fortunately, there are some in government who have taken notice of this gross injustice and are preparing to attempt a legislative correction long overdue. Senator Joe Lieberman, D-CT, and Senator Jeff Sessions, R-AL, are scheduled to introduce the Honoring Every Requirement of Exemplary Service (HEROES) Act on January 24th. This legislation will increase the benefit paid to the survivors of military personnel killed in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, and future conflicts, from $12,400 to $100,000, retroactive to October 2001. The benefit for non-combat deaths will remain at $12,400. The Act will raise SGLI Insurance coverage from $250,000 to $400,000, with the government paying the premiums for the first $150,000 for military personnel serving in a combat zone, also retroactive to October 2001.

So you say you support the troops? Then as soon as you finish reading this, start hammering that keyboard and let your two senators and your congressman know that you expect no less than their full support for early passage of the HEROES Act. To a person, they all swear they support the troops, regardless of party affiliation or individual positions on the war. Let them know, their future electoral efforts will, in your mind, be dependent upon their actions on behalf of those troops and those families who have given that “last full measure of devotion,” to their nation.Want a place to start? In every generation, America has been graced with heroes who have gone to war to protect our freedom and defend our ideals. These heroes have worn all colors of uniforms ¯ Army green, Marine Corps khaki, Air Force and Navy blue. But no matter the color of their uniform or the manner of their service, they’ve always been there, under the Stars and Stripes, fighting America’s battles.
On Veterans Day, we celebrate our generations of military heroes.
In a perfect world, Veterans Day would be one of our most important holidays, and we would use it to build and expand a profound understanding of what our heroes have done for us and our nation while expressing our infinite gratitude for their sacrifice.
Make no mistake. They all sacrificed. Whether it was extended separation from loved ones and home or surviving combat or surrendering their very lives, they all gave of themselves for the rest of us.
Renowned war correspondent Joe Galloway - who has spent more time in combat than most generals - captures our heroes’ sacrifice in his description of the troops who survived a two-day battle in the Ia Drang Valley of Vietnam in 1965:
Our young-old faces, chiseled and gaunt from the fever and the heat and the sleepless nights, now stare back at us, lost and damned strangers, frozen in yellowing snapshots packed away in cardboard boxes with medals and ribbons.
Yet sadly, in some ways, Veterans Day has become a second-rate holiday. Most of us don’t have the occasion thrust under our noses by virtue of a day off. And, even if we did, taking the time to remember and honor our veterans isn’t the way most of us would choose to spend our leisure time. That’s unfortunate, and we need to do better.
How can we honor our generations of heroes? First, we can listen, and we can learn. Seek out a veteran. Take time. Sit still. Open your ears, your heart and your mind. Say, “thank you.”
If you can’t find a veteran, open a book. Though you can’t succeed, do your best to understand. Let their experiences seep into you. Even a small step toward understanding will make it impossible to discount their sacrifice or forget what they have done.
Make sure our children understand why our veterans are also our heroes. And help the children learn to value the nation and the ideals that so many have given their lives to protect.
Historian Stephen Ambrose captured all of this in his account of World War II combat in Western Europe:
At the core, the American citizen soldiers knew the difference between right and wrong, and they didn’t want to live in a world in which wrong prevailed. So they fought, and won, and we all of us, living and yet to be born, must be forever profoundly grateful.
Now more than ever, at a time when our nation is locked in a new battle between right and wrong, between freedom and terror, it is incumbent on those of us who have not marched into battle to do our part - to celebrate our heroes, and the generations of heroes that have come before.
Veterans Day provides the perfect opportunity.

Tomorrow is Veterans Day. We encourage our readers to set aside time to reflect on the sacrifice of our Patriot veterans and honor them accordingly.
On November 11th, 1921, an unknown American soldier from World War I was buried in Arlington National Cemetery, in recognition of WWI veterans and in conjunction with the timing of cessation of hostilities at 11 a.m., November 11, 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). President Warren Harding requested that: "All...citizens...indulge in a period of silent thanks to God for these... valorous lives and of supplication for His Divine mercy...on our beloved country." Inscribed on the Tomb are the words: "Here lies in honored glory an American soldier know but to God." The day became known as "Armistice Day." In 1954, Congress, wanting to recognize the sacrifice of veterans since WWI, proposed to change Armistice Day to Veterans Day in their honor. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, former Supreme Commander in WWII, signed the legislation.
To honor those veterans who sacrificed all, an Army honor guard from the 3d U.S. Infantry (The Old Guard) keeps day and night vigil at Arlington. At 11 a.m. tomorrow, a combined color guard representing all military service branches executes "Present Arms" at the tomb for the laying of a wreath by the president. This is followed by "Taps."
The Defense Department has totaled one measure of the price of liberty -- almost 1.2 million members of our fighting forces have died while in service to our country since the American Revolution; 1.4 million have been wounded. The numbers, of course, offer no reckoning of the inestimable value of these individual citizens' lives, and the sacrifices borne by their families. But we do know their sacrifices defended a precious gift handed down to us -- the liberties we cherish. Every day -- but today especially -- let us always hold our veterans and their families in our hearts.

Here is what we know. There has been no creditable information as to his location for about 2 years. There were rumors that he was in the Tora Bora region at the time of the last major operation (Anaconda). Rumors also states that he was in the Kashmir area of Pakistan, one of the ‘stans of the former Soviet Union, or western China.

Personally, as there has been not a single sighting of this ‘person’ (term used loosely), and the fact that he stands at over 6 feet tall, who would stand out like a nun in a whore house if he ever was to show his face, the only conclusion that could be drawn is that this bucket of pus is no longer has a pulse. My guess is that he was holed up in the bunker and cave complex of the Tora Bora, and as a result of the operations he redecorated the walls of one with a reddish/brown goo when the JDAM popped in his lap.

If not, then perhaps he would like to come out and play some more?

It's National Baked Bean Month, and the pretenders were in full regalia in Beantown Monday night as the Demo-lition Party launched its parade of their proudest, most pompous propagandists and praters in front of 4,300 delegates. Full of beans, one and all!
But the infotainment started the eve prior to the DNC's confab, when phony frontrunner John "Fastball" Kerry snuck into town to throw out the first pitch for Sunday's game between the Red Sox and Yankees. Against a backdrop of competing cheers and jeers, Kerry wound up and hurled one into the dirt well in front of his catcher, a 23-year-old Massachusetts native and Afghanistan/Iraq War veteran.
Apparently, Kerry's medal-tossing arm (or were those ribbons he tossed?) isn't what it used to be. Nonetheless, he proved he can still come up short when delivering to America's military personnel.
Earlier, when asked who his favorite Red Sox player was, Kerry responded, "Manny Ortez." The Sox do field Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz, but there is no "Manny Ortez" on the roster. (We hasten to add, however, that "Manny Ortez" was closer to the mark than the response Kerry gave the last time he was asked that question: "My favorite Red Sox player of all time is 'The Walking Man,' Eddie Yost." Yost never played for the Red Sox.)
Not to be outdone by her husband's sneak preview, Ms. Teresa (Tuh-RAY-zuh) Heinz (or "Kerry" depending on the audience) was across town telling her home-state (Pennsylvania) delegates that some of the rhetoric coming out of the Democrat Party is "un-Pennsylvanian -- and sometimes un-American." A few minutes later, Colin McNickle, editorial page editor of the conservative-leaning Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, questioned Ms. Heinz about what she meant by "un-American," to which she responded angrily, "I didn't say that. You're putting words in my mouth. I didn't say that."
When pressed by McNickle, whose paper is published near one of the many Heinz-Kerry estates (link to -- http://kerry-04.org/about/homes.php ) the opinionated ketchup heiress let loose with, "You said something I didn't say. Now shove it." (Not quite as eloquent as Dick Cheney's recent rejoinder, but close.)
Fortunately for the Demos, the Heinz-Kerry handlers whisked them out of town before they could provide any more embarrassments ahead of Monday's opening ceremonies. But unfortunately for the Demos, they failed to take convention speaker Christie Vilsack, wife of Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack, with them. Indeed, Ms. Vilsack provided plenty of amusement Monday morning in a Boston Herald Op-Ed, observing, "I am fascinated by the way some African-Americans speak to each other in an English I struggle to understand." She then added that Southerners seem to have "slurred speech," and "the only way I can speak like residents of Pennsylvania and New Jersey is to let my jaw drop an inch and talk with my mouth in an 'O' like a fish." Thank you, Ms. Vilsack!
Apparently the DNC circulated a memo to all convention speakers that they were not to speak ill of the Bush administration, but everyone else was fair game. Vilsack, for one, is confident that Pennsylvania, New Jersey and black folk everywhere are in the Demo- bag. But, John Edwards notwithstanding, we don't think Kerry should count the Deep South just yet.
There was plenty of entertaining print elsewhere, like this Washington Post front-page headline promoting its special section on the 2004 Democratic National Convention: "ELECTION 2000" -- we kid you not -- in a very LARGE font! But the Post headline was not quite as big as the font on the banner hanging prominently behind the convention speakers' podium under the al-Jazeera Arabic news network's press skybox. That would be the same al-Jazeera network, which regularly broadcasts (read: promotes) the torture and execution of American military and civilian personnel by al-Qa'ida terrorists in Iraq.
Al-Jazeera's 20-foot-tall, $30,000 banner was quickly replaced with another that promoted "JohnKerry.com." (Our convention moles suggested a "Kerry-04.com" banner, but the DNC declined, citing their extreme aversion to truth-telling.) Convention spokeswoman Peggy Wilhide insisted that al-Jazeera had not been singled out. "Frankly, we're not providing a forum for companies to advertise, we're trying to create the kind of atmosphere we want to best present John Kerry and the Democratic [sic!] party." Of course, the large Leftmedia banners for NBC, CBS, ABC and CNN remained in place.
It should be noted, however, that the Demos made amends with al-Jazeera by allowing Islamist imam Yahya Hendi to give a closing "prayer." Interestingly enough, this is the same Yahya Hendi who was a character witness for Sami al-Arian, the Florida "professor" who was indicted by the Justice Department after 9/11 on 50 counts of terror-related charges. Monday night was a blast from the past, featuring (not coincidentally) a lineup of Southern White House occupants and near-misses including Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and, of course, Albert Gore. And it was downhill from there.
Having endured four long nights of hot air, concluding with Kerry's stiff Algorian acceptance speech Thursday evening, we offer the following rogues' gallery of Demo-goguery, the retread politics of division masquerading as messages of unity and optimism.
On division (read: "Demo modus operandi" -- this from the Party whose theme is "Two Americas")... "We are constantly told America is deeply divided. [Republicans] need a divided America. But we don't." --Bill Clinton "Yet in our own time, there are those who seek to divide us. ... America needs a genuine uniter -- not a divider. We have seen how they rule -- they divide and try to conquer. They know the power of the people is weakened when our house is divided." --Teddy Kennedy "Reject Republican efforts to exploit our differences and divide our nation." --Roberta Achtenberg "There are choices -- the politics of 'Jim Crow' or of civil rights, the politics of imprisonment or of liberation, the politics of division or of one America." --Marcia Bristo "Together we can...transcend our differences and divisions." --Hillary Rodham-Clinton-Rodham "Sooner or later, voters in places like that [the South] are going to grow tired of voting on guns, god and gays and start voting on education, health care and jobs. ...We can't be a national party unless we are willing to take our base to Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama. ...We need to send a progressive message and stop being afraid of going to Utah or Idaho or Alabama or Texas." --Howard Dean (AAARRRGGGGHHHH!!!!) "Between now and November -- you can reject the tired, old, hateful, negative politics of the past." --John "Two Americas" Edwards "I want to address these next words directly to President George W. Bush: In the weeks ahead, let's be optimists, not just opponents. Let's build unity in the American family, not angry division. This is our time to reject the kind of politics calculated to divide race from race, group from group, region from region. Maybe some just see us divided into red states and blue states, but I see us as one America -- red, white, and blue." --John Kerry (Tell a lie often enough....)
On taxes (read: "class warfare" division)... "[T]his year, in this election, there is a candidate who understands the middle-class squeeze. Instead of just helping those at the top, I think we ought to give everyone a chance to reach the top." --Dick Gephardt (So, there's a middle class between the "two Americas" after all...) "Today, the middle-class squeeze has become a way of life for millions of American families." --Tom Daschle "[We're] standing up for middle class and working Americans who got a tax increase, not a tax cut." --Howard Dean "We are tired of seeing our hard-earned tax dollars go to haves and have-mores, while the must-haves, could-haves, should-haves, maybes and have-nots have not at all." --Stephanie Tubbs-Jones "And why had the powerful been allowed to doggedly cut taxes for the most privileged, knowing there was little left for the most vulnerable." --Rosa de Laura "[T]he truth is, we still live in two different Americas. We are going to keep and protect the tax cuts for 98 percent of Americans -- 98%. We're going to roll back...the tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. We can build one America where we no longer have two healthcare systems. We shouldn't have two public-school systems in this country: one for the most affluent communities, and one for everybody else.... We shouldn't have two different economies in America: one for people who are set for life, their kids and grandkids will be just fine, and then one for most Americans who live paycheck to paycheck." --John Edwards "I will roll back the tax cuts for the wealthiest individuals who make over $200,000 a year, so we can invest in job creation, health care and education. ... [H]ere at home, wages are falling, health care costs are rising, and our great middle class is shrinking. People are working weekends; they're working two jobs, three jobs, and they're still not getting ahead. ... We value an America where the middle class is not being squeezed, but doing better." --John Kerry (The Bush economy is so bad, we're surprised anyone can find just ONE job.)
On race (read: "race-card" division) "In all due respect, Mr. President, read my lips: Our vote is not for sale." --Al Sharpton (Wonder how Tawana Brawley is voting...?) "In my hometown of Cleveland, the unemployment rate is over 11%. In our black and Hispanic communities, the unemployment rate is higher, entering into the double digits." --Stephanie Tubbs-Jones (And we thought 11% constituted "double digits.") "I have heard some discussions and debates about where, and in front of what audiences, we should talk about race, equality, and civil rights. Well, I have an answer to that question. Everywhere. This is not an African-American issue, not a Latino issue, not an Asian-American issue, this is an American issue. It's about who we are, what our values are, what kind of country we want to live in." --John Edwards
On healthcare (read: "Hillary-care" division) "We need to rededicate ourselves to the task of providing coverage for the 44 million Americans who are uninsured and the millions of others who face rising costs." --Hillary Rodham-Clinton-Rodham "John Kerry won't sit back and watch while premiums rise four times faster than workers' wages." --Tammy Baldwin (Oh, really? Kerry has protected malpractice lawyers like John Edwards for the last three decades, while Edwards and his ilk have padded their pockets with largess paid for by those very premiums!) "John believes that we can, and we will, give every family and every child access to affordable health care." --Teresa Heinz "You know what's happening. Your premiums, your co-payments, your deductibles have all gone through the roof. ... When I'm President, America will stop being the only advanced nation in the world which fails to understand that health care is not a privilege for the wealthy, the connected, and the elected." --John Kerry (John Edwards knows why premiums are so high, and isn't Kerry a U.S. senator?)
On "partners" (read: "gender neutrality" division) "[E]specially my beloved partner in life, Tipper." --Albert Arnold Gore "I found a true partner in life...." --Dick Gephardt "John Kerry will guarantee the right to family-health benefits to all our families -- including domestic partners." --Tammy Baldwin "In addition to being a Senior Vice President of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, I am a lawyer, a mother, and a lesbian. I am proud to be all of those things and one thing more: a Democrat!" --Roberta Achtenberg
On Demo-leadership (read: "Dem and dumber") "To those of you who felt disappointed or angry with the outcome in 2000, I want you to remember all of those feelings. But then I want you to do with them what I have done: Focus them fully and completely on putting John Kerry and John Edwards in the White House." --Albert Gore (And we thought he'd endorsed Howard Dean...) "[T]onight, we're all here to represent the Democratic wing of the Democratic (sic) party." --Howard Dean "We went all the way to Herbert Hoover, and we never got the 40 acres [Lincoln promised]. We didn't get the mule. So we decided we'd ride this donkey as far as it would take us." --Al Sharpton "With John Kerry as president, global climate change and other threats to the health of our planet will begin to be reversed." --Teresa Heinz "Our struggle is with the politics of fear and favoritism in our own time, in our own country. Our struggle -- like so many others before -- is with those who put their own narrow interest ahead of the public interest. ... I intend to stay in this job until I get the hang of it." --Teddy Kennedy (Mary Jo Kopechne was not available for comment.) "I think I know a great leader when I see one and so does America. [Bill] showed Democrats how to win again. And so will John Kerry." --Hillary Rodham-Clinton-Rodham "For four years, we've heard a lot of talk about values. But values spoken without actions taken are just slogans. Values are not just words. And it is time for those who talk about family values to start valuing families." --John Kerry
On military service (read: "The JFK legacy project") "If you have any question about what he's made of, you need to spend three minutes with the men who served with him then.... In summary -- so, what do we take away from all of this Demo-babble? We thought Bill Clinton was good at faking right and running left, but Kerry and company make Clinton's antics look like child's play. George Washington warned that future generations must "Guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism." Indeed.

In other news from the Left...
Listening to the speech of Democrat vice-presidential nominee John Edwards, one might think America is reliving the Carter Malaise. Senator Edwards' "politics of hope" speech burst forth the happy news: America is in decline. The generic grandiloquence of Senator Edwards' homily of a divided America, "where one works and the other reaps the rewards," may not resonate with voters as well as the Kerry campaign hopes. The reason? Jingoistic rhetoric tends to collide with incisive reality. As Senator Kerry lambastes President Bush for his "tax cuts for the rich" and the "middle-class-squeeze," the economy continues to grow, having added about one million new jobs so far. Those pesky job gains, in fact, have averaged 211,000 per month this year alone. Consumer confidence is at its highest point in two years, corporate profits are looking good, and GDP is forecast to grow 4.75% by the fourth quarter of 2004. And Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan sees sunny skies ahead for the economy. During his semi-annual report to the Congress, he pronounced the recovery "self sustaining," due in no small part to a stronger employment market. Fears of deflation and a shriveling economy have all but disappeared.
From the JFK DEMO-lition derby...
Fresh from their success at forcing John Kerry, the French-looking Democrat presidential candidate, to stop using their images in ads promoting his campaign, Swift Boat Veterans for Truth are back on the war path against their fellow Vietnam Vet. (Yes, fellow Patriots, you heard that right: John Kerry actually served in Vietnam.)
One of the founders of the veterans' group, Charley Plumly, U.S. Naval Academy Class of '55, is one of Kerry's outspoken opponents. As Kerry campaigned in heavily military Norfolk, Virginia, Plumly, bitter over Kerry's accusations of American military atrocities in Vietnam, told the Left-leaning Norfolk Virginian-Pilot, "We were there." Like the other Swift Boat Veterans for Truth members, Plumly resents Kerry allegations of American "war crimes," in which he claimed to have participated. Says Plumly, "We know what happened. And it wasn't like he says it was."
The group's 250 members fought from the same riverboats as Kerry, but have been a thorn in their fellow vet's side throughout the campaign.
Left-wing pro-Kerry media critics notwithstanding, these vets are still high profile on the national and the grassroots levels. Indeed, as the Democrat Convention touts Kerry's war record, the Swifties are highlighting those pesky truths that Kerry and Co. would rather not talk about.

And a bit of fun ... Kerry recently lectured President Bush for having politely declined to address the virulently anti-Bush NAACP. "When you're president," Kerry said, "you need to talk to all of the people, and that's exactly what I intend to do." So, taking Kerry up on his claim, Grover Norquist, of Americans for Tax Reform, has invited Kerry to speak before his Wednesday gathering of conservative and moderate-conservative organization leaders. That invitation was followed by invitations from the Family Research Council and others. Thus far, Kerry (as manner-born as he is) has failed to RSVP.
In other news from the Political Front...
"The commission has agreed among its members not to feed the partisan political environment by appearing in any partisan forums or contributing to partisan interpretations of our report," says Demo 9/11 Commission member and former Watergate prosecutor Richard Ben-Veniste. "It would be unfortunate if that process begins before the report has even been officially released."
Talk about bolting the barn door after the horse has skedaddled! Shouldn't the Commission have employed this "no partisanship" rule by selecting a less politicized membership in the first place? And shouldn't those same partisan commissioners have resisted their biological urge to conduct countless Leftmedia interviews while the investigative hearings were ongoing?
Additionally, Commission members have done nothing to quell speculation that one of their own might be the right pick for the new cabinet-level position of national-intelligence director that they're suggesting.
News from the Swamp...
In the Executive Branch, President Bush signed H.R. 218, the "National Concealed Carry for Cops" bill, into law on 22 July. His signature ended a 12-year battle by the Law Enforcement Alliance of America and Congressman Randy Cunningham of California to get the bill passed and signed. The new law permits off-duty and retired law-enforcement officers to carry concealed firearms in each of the 50 states. John Kerry actually left the campaign trail to attend his job as senator in order to vote against this bill back in March. What about the cops in the Teamsters and their undying support for the Democrats? We're betting they'll overlook this vote.
From the warfront with Jihadistan...
On Wednesday, in the Iraqi city of Baquba north of Baghdad, some 70 Iraqi civilians and police officers were killed and another 56 wounded as terrorists set off a car bomb near a line of new Iraqi police recruits. Taking a heavy civilian toll on the busy streets, the attack marks one of the deadliest since Iraq's liberation, and by far the most deadly terrorist act since the restoration of Iraqi sovereignty on 28 June, exactly one month ago.
While The Patriot doesn't generally report on the day-to-day ups and downs of the reconstruction, a few observations seem to be in order. In particular, one aspect of the attack not lost upon the Iraqis is the fact that no Coalition troops were in the vicinity at the time of the explosion. Rather, the attack was directed solely against the Iraqi people themselves -- and we trust that this will bolster Iraqi resolve to act against the enemies of their state. Plainly, the fighting on the ground in Iraq is one of ideologies. Whether it be the thinly-veiled fascism of Ba'athist remnants or the Islamist totalitarianism of Jihadi insurgents, the Iraqi people are in a fight against the enemies of democracy and liberalization -- against those who see their extremist ideologies as the path to political and territorial gain.
Tomorrow, 1,000 elected Iraqi delegates will meet in Baghdad to fill seats for a 100-member interim governing council. Terrorist attacks are expected to intensify leading up to the convention, all the more evidence that democracy in Iraq -- and the Middle East -- must succeed. As in Afghanistan, the U.S. must stand firm with our newest ally in the Middle East and actively allow the fragile but intuitive forces of democratization to take their course.
On the Homeland Security front...
Earlier this week, authorities in Texas arrested an Arab woman identifying herself as Farida Goolam Mohamed Ahmed, and are currently seeking to confirm her identity and nationality. Ahmed, detained for illegal entry and falsifying a passport (which was missing six pages), appears on an FBI watch list in association with an investigation of overseas terrorism. Ahmed later confessed to crossing the border illegally from Mexico -- at a time when the government is warning of al-Qa'ida's use of women and non-Arabs as terrorists, to avoid detection. Authorities also report that fraudulent South African passports, like Ahmed's, are falling into the hands of al-Qa'ida operatives. Ahmed was traveling to New York. Developing....
Regarding the redistribution of your income...
Friends of The Patriot at Citizens Against Government Waste have developed a color-coded warning level system called the "Pork Advisory System" for wasteful spending in Congress. The colors match those of the terror alert system: green, blue, yellow, orange and red. Currently, the Pork Advisory Level is "Low," or Green, but that's only due to the fact that Congress is in recess. Appropriately, when Congress is in session, the level automatically goes to "Guarded." When debating budget, the level moves to "Elevated," and when appropriations bills are up, the level is "High." The highest level, "Severe," is reserved for when Congress is "in conference." Fellow Patriots, as Congress continues to refuse any sort of restriction on spending, we must keep a watchful eye. Reps. Sam Johnson (R-Texas), Pat Toomey (R-Pa.), Tom Feeney (R-Fla.), and Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) are part of an all-too-short list of fiscal conservatives that we should be thankful for.

In business/economic news...
Despite all of Kerry's rhetoric regarding just how bad we have it here in America, more evidence has continued to roll in that our economic productivity is steadily improving. First we were told by the Kerry campaign that our economy was in shambles. When it was clear that recovery was under way, he insisted that said recovery was "jobless," resulting only in more wealth for the already rich and employed. This of course is nonsense, so we are being told that our economic recovery is unsustainable, that it's merely a temporary anomaly that will soon pass.
But Alan Greenspan testified before Congress last week, stating solidly and optimistically that it was wise to raise interest rates, precisely because the current economic recovery is decidedly sustainable. Indeed, there has been growth in demand, but most important, American workers have grown more productive. Greater productivity means profitable businesses, which lead to higher employment and sustainable increases in demand. According to Greenspan, future interest-rate increases will likely be necessary to reflect the growing value and productivity of the economy. Bad news for Kerry. Good news for the rest of us.
What about that "middle-class squeeze?" Recent reports conclude upper-, middle- and lower-income households have all benefited from the President's tax cuts, to varying degrees, but the latter two not nearly as much as upper income families. Rising gasoline and food prices have put the squeeze on wages -- wages that have not risen to keep up with inflation. Labor Department data indicate that the average hourly wage for production workers increased 2.1% in the second quarter -- behind the 2.8% increase in the CPI -- an apparent net decrease of 0.7% in real wages. The difference is due mainly to what Mr. Greenspan calls the transitory nature of volatile food and energy prices. Leaving out food and energy, the Feds say core inflation will grow 1.9% in 2004. One fundamental economic principle ensures an upbeat future for long-term wages: productivity growth. Even as the economy contracted early in President Bush's administration, productivity growth drove up hourly wages an annual average of 0.7% from 2000-2003. With the economy expanding, inflation projected to remain low, and the job market tightening, higher productivity -- and subsequent pay gains -- will follow.
Clearly, the numbers are on the President's side.
Speaking of bad news for Kerry, Greenspan has reiterated his support for Bush's tax cuts, saying that they moderated the recent recession and helped us along to a quick recovery. Asked about the problematic budget deficit that resulted from the cuts, Greenspan said, "I am for lower taxes and lower spending and lower deficits." That's exactly right. Bush was right to lower taxes, but lower taxes are ultimately meaningless apart from lower spending.
And last...
As John Kerry ended his speech last night, here is what America -- and the world -- heard on CNN as DNC Convention Director Don Mischer orchestrated the final fainfare: "Go balloons, go balloons! Go balloons! I don't see anything happening. Go balloons! Go balloons! Go balloons! Standby confetti. Keep coming, balloons. More balloons. Bring it- balloons, balloons, balloons! We want balloons, tons of them. Bring them down. Let them all come. No confetti. No confetti yet. No confetti. All right, go balloons, go balloons. We need more balloons. All balloons! All balloons! Keep going! Come on, guys, lets move it. J*sus! We need more balloons. I want all balloons to go, g*dd*mmit. Go confetti. Go confetti. More confetti. I want more balloons. What's happening to the balloons? We need more balloons. We need all of them coming down. Go balloons- balloons? What's happening balloons? There's not enough coming down! Bush "stole" the election

ON WRIT OF CERTIORARI TO THE FLORIDA SUPREME COURT
[December 12, 2000]

I won't bore you with the detailes, but here is the meat:

The Supreme Court of Florida has said that the legislature intended the State’s electors to “participat[e] fully in the federal electoral process,” as provided in 3 U.S.C. § 5. ___ So. 2d, at ___ (slip op. at 27); see also Palm Beach Canvassing Bd. v. Harris, 2000 WL 1725434, *13 (Fla. 2000). That statute, in turn, requires that any controversy or contest that is designed to lead to a conclusive selection of electors be completed by December 12. That date is upon us, and there is no recount procedure in place under the State Supreme Court’s order that comports with minimal constitutional standards. Because it is evident that any recount seeking to meet the December 12 date will be unconstitutional for the reasons we have discussed, we reverse the judgment of the Supreme Court of Florida ordering a recount to proceed.

Seven Justices of the Court agree that there are constitutional problems with the recount ordered by the Florida Supreme Court that demand a remedy. See post, at 6 (Souter, J., dissenting); post, at 2, 15 (Breyer, J., dissenting). The only disagreement is as to the remedy. Because the Florida Supreme Court has said that the Florida Legislature intended to obtain the safe-harbor benefits of 3 U.S.C. § 5 Justice Breyer’s proposed remedy–remanding to the Florida Supreme Court for its ordering of a constitutionally proper contest until December 18-contemplates action in violation of the Florida election code, and hence could not be part of an “appropriate” order authorized by Fla. Stat. §102.168(8) (2000).

    None are more conscious of the vital limits on judicial authority than are the members of this Court, and none stand more in admiration of the Constitution’s design to leave the selection of the President to the people, through their legislatures, and to the political sphere. When contending parties invoke the process of the courts, however, it becomes our unsought responsibility to resolve the federal and constitutional issues the judicial system has been forced to confront.
    The judgment of the Supreme Court of Florida is reversed, and the case is remanded for further proceedings not inconsistent with this opinion.
    Pursuant to this Court’s Rule 45.2, the Clerk is directed to issue the mandate in this case forthwith.

Note to Ms. Ronstat: SHUT UP AND SING. If the audience wanted to hear what you had to say, they would have gone to an event where you paid for it not the people who bought tickets to hear you sing. Don't use someone else's dime to foist your views. We don't want to hear it. If you and your buddy MOORELIES believe that you have been censured, get a grip and a clue. You were contracted to sing.

If you want to flap your gums, use your own venue.

Well, it seems that the former National Security Adviser has a bit of a problem. That aint the half of it. This lugnut failed to follow instructions having to do with handling of classified documents and now tried to joke his way out of some hard time in a prison cell. Whit I see is he aint the only one with a "personnel" problem. The people at the secure document section of the archive also have some 'splainin' to do. At the minimum, the document clerk should be demoted, the security manager should be fired and Berger's security clearance should be revoked and he should NEVER be allowed unaccompanied access to any document classifieds higher the "For Official Use Only"

Upon entering the Navy in 1966, John Kerry signed a six-year contract (plus a six-month extension during wartime) and an Officer Candidate contract for five years of active duty and active Naval Reserve. This indicates that Kerry was clearly a commissioned officer at the time of his 1970 meeting with NVA Communists in Paris -- in direct violation of the UCMJ's Article 104 part 904, and U.S. Code 18 U.S.C. 953. That meeting, and Kerry's subsequent coddling of Communists while leading mass protests against our military in the year that followed, also place him in direct violation of our Constitution's Article three, Section three, which defines treason as "giving aid and comfort" to the enemy in time of warfare. (As General Vo Nguyen Giap is his witness....)

Thus, we refer our readers to the Constitution's Fourteenth Amendment, Section 3, which states, "No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President ... having previously taken an oath ... to support the Constitution of the United States, [who has] engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof."

It is for this reason -- for his record of giving aid and comfort to the enemy while a member of the U.S. Armed Forces in violation of his oath -- that we insist John Kerry resign his seat in the U.S. Senate. He has dishonored his family, dishonored his state and dishonored our nation. He is not fit for public office at any level of government, much less, the highest office in the land. John Kerry should resign.
